For many years, researchers and specialists in assisted reproduction have been trying to discover if IVF and other treatments can harm the intelligence of little ones. Several studies show that babies born by IVF have the same cognitive abilities as those conceived naturally.
Recently, the journal Human Reproduction created by the University of Oxford published a remarkably interesting study on the intelligence of babies born by fertility techniques. Two University researchers analyzed data from hundreds of children born through in vitro fertilization in the United Kingdom, finding a positive relationship between assisted reproduction and cognitive development when the children were between three and five years old.
The findings of the Cognitive development in children up to age 11 years born after ART a longitudinal cohort study demonstrate, like other research, that assisted reproduction treatments do not impair the thinking skills of babies.
The study explains that since the first IVF baby was born in 1978, the use of assisted reproductive treatments has grown rapidly, with more than 5 million babies conceived by 2012.
Other research by specialists at the Groeningen University Medical Center in the Netherlands revealed that IVF does not increase the risk of severe cognitive impairment (known as intellectual disability) or neuromotor disabilities such as cerebral palsy.
Also, did you know that? A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility states that there is no evidence to show that babies of parents with fertility problems have difficulties in school during childhood, or low school performance in adolescence or less intelligence in adulthood.
